Nellore is located at [1]. It has an average elevation of 19 meters (62 feet). It is situated in the southeast corner of Andhra Pradesh, on the south and north banks of the River Pennar (also spelled Penna or Penneru).
The area of the district is 13,076 km�. The district is bounded by the Bay of Bengal to the east, the Kadapa District to the west, the Prakasam District to the north and the state of Tamil Nadu & Chittor to the south.

As of 2001 India census, Nellore had a population of 378,947. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Nellore has an average literacy rate of 72%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 76%, and female literacy is 68%. In Nellore, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.
